Description and synopsis
This multinational production tells the story of the complicated love affairs of Dr. Gräsler, a Hungarian doctor specialising in thermal treatments who, with World War I looming, spends the winter in Lanzarote before returning to his own country, Hungary. The plot is inspired by a historical phenomenon that took place in the Canary Islands from the end of the 19th century, namely the beginning of health tourism, in which wealthy Europeans with health problems came to the Canary Islands to benefit from its spring climate.
The film relies mainly on interior scenes to recreate what happens on the island, which is unusual for filming on Lanzarote, which tends to use mostly outdoor landscapes. We’re highlighting this film, nominated in five categories for the main Italian film awards of its year, precisely because of the use of the island’s large traditional country houses, as well as other historical settings that were used to recreate the atmosphere of the early twentieth century.
My Dear Dr. Gräsler stands out for featuring some very prominent figures of European cinema, especially Italian cinema, starting with Ennio Morricone, one of the most famous film music composers in history. This composer and conductor has worked for such renowned directors as Sergio Leone, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Brian de Palma, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodóvar and Roman Polanski.
The director, also Italian, was Roberto Faenza, who made According to Pereira (1996), among other films. But in My Dear Dr. Gräsler , the main highlights are the illustrious names found in the cast, such as the American actor and singer Keith Carradine, the British actors Kristin Scott Thomas and Miranda Richardson, and the Swedish Max von Sydow, all winners of major awards in film, theatre and television.
