Descripción y sinopsis
Several international agencies launch a joint space mission to Mars with top specialists ready to explore the planet. But on the approach, the landing craft crashes, killing the commander. The five surviving astronauts are unable to return to Earth because of damage to the craft and, after calculating their reserves, they conclude that there is only enough oxygen and food for two people to survive for the months it will take for the rescue mission to arrive. Faced with this situation, they must decide which two people will stay and wait, while the others will be left with the option of exploring the planet in search of a miracle.
The volcanic areas of Lanzarote are among the best places in the world for this type of film with its plot that takes place on Mars. In fact, the island has been designated a UNESCO Geopark site and several NASA and European Space Agency teams have trained on Lanzarote for their missions to the Moon or the so-called ‘red planet’. The similarity between the island lava landscape and that of other planets in our solar system not only attracts the attention of international scientists and millions of visitors, but also artists and filmmakers from different backgrounds. The extreme aridity makes it ideal for astronaut training, but the beauty of its impressive geology also stuns tourists and fires the imagination of creators.
Large parts of the footage of Stranded were shot in the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), as the Timanfaya National Park is traditionally known, an area corresponding to approximately 20% of the surface of the island that was razed to the ground between 1730 and 1736. In those six years, the lava buried more than a dozen villages and one of the most prosperous agricultural areas of the island, in one of the fiercest volcanic processes experienced on the planet in recent centuries.
