Description and synopsis
The film producer Agustín Santana, winner of four Goya awards and originally from the island of Gran Canaria, returned to Lanzarote after Mararía ( 1988) to produce a comedy written and directed by Ángeles Reiné. It was the first feature film for this director from Cádiz, although she already had extensive experience in advertising and television, with works such as the successful series Doctor Mateo.
So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! tells the story of a young Spanish lawyer who tries to stop her grandmother from marrying her lifelong best friend, in order to avoid a scandal that could jeopardise her marriage to a young Scottish man from a very conservative family.
One of the outstanding cinematrogaphic aspects of this film is its splendid cast of Spanish actresses, from established veteran performers such as Verónica Forqué and Rosa María Sardá, to the multi-award-winning Candela Peña and the young, up-and-coming Ingrid García Jonsson.
The film, which was also shot in the Portuguese city of Oporto, filmed part of its footage in the north of the island, specifically in the municipality of Haría, which is one of the least tourist municipalities on the island, and which is home to many curious spots, from the town itself, a picturesque village located in the so-called “Valley of a Thousand Palm Trees”, to beaches, rural spaces, volcanic areas and interventions by the artist César Manrique, such as the Mirador del Río and the Jameos del Agua. So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! also has abundant scenes filmed in interior spaces of establishments on the island: restaurants, tourist flats and hotels, historic mansions, etc.
