Description and synopsis
In 2012, Spanish director Daniel Calparsoro, who specialises in thrillers, shot some scenes for Invader in Arrecife, the island’s capital. The film tells the story of a Spanish military doctor who is sent to Iraq in 2003 and, after being attacked in a routine convoy, is forced to hide and flee for his life.
This film, which served as the island’s début appearance in a in war film, has the added bonus of featuring Lanzarote’s urban settings, which normally take a back seat due to the star quality of the natural landscapes. Certainly, in addition to the striking volcanic, desert, agricultural and coastal areas that Lanzarote possesses, the island also offers a wide variety of urban environments, from large tourist centres to picturesque villages, ancient urban centres, areas of modern architecture, large ports and airports and the city of Arrecife, which is the capital and is home to more than 60,000 inhabitants.
It is in the centre of Arrecife that the Iraq conflict that is the backdrop to Invader was recreated. The film achieved five nominations at the Goyas, Spain’s main film awards, and the work also brought together leading names in Spanish performance today.
