Description and synopsis
This Hollywood blockbuster (with a budget of 100 million dolars) goes back to the roots of the contemporary cultural myth of Moby Dick, although it is not bades directly on the work of the writer Herman Melville but rather on The Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, a book by Nathaniel Philbrick that tells the true story that inspired Melville to write Moby Dick.
With a purely seafaring plot, it is logical that one of the settings chosen for filming in Lanzarote was the island of Alegranza, in the Chinijo Archipelago. (Chinijo is a Spanish word specific to Lanzarote meaning small).
Lanzarote is geographically and administratively home to a small archipelago of islets in the north, known as the Chinijo Archipelago , made up of the islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.
With the exception of the island of La Graciosa, the rest of the islets are not populated, and together with some areas in the north of Lanzarote they form the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, one of the largest and oldest marine reserves in the European Union. This mixture of land and sea is notable for its marine ecosystems, but also for its birdlife and the numerous endemic plant species it is home to. The Chinijo Archipelago was one of the great assets in the designation of Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve and Geopark, two important environmental distinctions awarded by UNESCO.
Landscape-wise, the Chinijo Archipelago offers views of enormous quality for cinema, from the great cliffs of the Risco de Famara and the paradisical beaches of La Graciosa, to different coastal caves and geological monuments of unique shapes, not to mention the aerial views of the islets and the underwater depths of a Marine Reserve of extraordinary quality.
In the Heart of the Sea, which featured classic Hollywood director Ron Howard (Apollo XIII, The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind, Solo: A Star Wars Story) and star Chris Hemsworth, some scenes were also filmed at the Charco de los Clicos, the spectacular green lake which has featured in more than 15 films.
