Description and synopsis
Since films based on Jules Verne and other greats of the fantasy genre have been filmed in Lanzarote, it may come as no surprise that the island was the location chosen for the filming of Foundation, an Amazon TV+ series based on the famous saga created by Isaac Asimov. In this case this famous university professor of biochemistry and writer of popular science and fiction books devised a futuristic story about power, civilisation and control of the galaxy that has had great international success in its television version.
The production of this series also featured other international backdrops, such as Ireland, Iceland and Malta. Episodes of the two seasons filmed up to 2022 were shot in Lanzarote, although scenes were also shot in Fuerteventura and Tenerife, two other islands in the archipelago. Since the very beginning of the relationship of cinema with the Canary Islands, many large international productions have taken advantage of the diversity of landscapes offered by the archipelago by filming on several islands. In addition to other industrial and economic advantages, the Canary Islands have the added bonus of being home to very different territories that are nevertheless located only a few kilometres away from each other. 40% of the surface area of the islands is under some form of protection; in fact, the Canary Islands have more than 140 Protected Natural Spaces.
The advantage for the film industry is that you don’t have to travel far to find volcanic or desert areas, large forests, spectacular ravines, urban settings or high mountain areas, not to mention all kinds of maritime scenery: beaches, islets, cliffs, varied seabeds and so on.
In recent years, many television and film productions have been filmed in Lanzarote as a result of the promotional and advisory work of the Lanzarote Film Commission, an office that forms part of the Sociedad de Promoción Exterior del Cabildo de Lanzarote, aimed at facilitating filming on the island, advising production companies and professional teams on locations, helping in the management of permits, putting foreign production companies in contact with the local professional network and providing information on logistics and services of all kinds on the island: restaurants, accommodation, institutions, etc.
