Description and synopsis

Lanzarote has featured in several episodes of the two historical stages of the famous television series Doctor Who, which has not only been recognised as the longest-running science fiction series in the world by Guinness World Records but is also a true icon of British culture. The BBC’s creation has won numerous awards and tributes, accompanied by large audiences over the sixty years since its creation. Doctor Who has also been noted for its use of music and special effects.

In Lanzarote, one of the places where it was filmed in the 1970s was the Mirador del Río. This architectural piece is one of the most valuable works by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique. This painter, sculptor and designer carried out a series of interventions in natural spaces on the island that have been recognised for their artistic value. The organic architecture and naturalistic aesthetics of the Mirador del Río fascinate hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, as well as offering majestic views of the Archipelago, a group of five islets located to the north of Lanzarote.

In 2014, Doctor Who episodes were also filmed at the Volcán del Cuervo, located in the Los Volcanes National Park, in the Timanfaya National Park and in La Geria.

The background to the large number of English productions filmed in Lanzarote is the fact that the island is a major international tourist destination, especially for the English market, which means very regular air connections. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 5 million British tourists came to the Canaries annually, including 1.5 million to Lanzarote, to which can be added another half a million coming from Ireland. This high British influx happens all year round because the Canary Islands do not have a specific tourist season, in fact autumn and winter are seen as one of the strongest times for tourism. This panorama means that the Canary Islands enjoy constant international flights throughout the year, an advantage for filming in our archipelago, to which must be added the quality of the maritime interconnections with Europe, Africa and America.
