Description and synopsis

A very special film for many reasons, it was the first example of musical cinema shot on the island and was a huge première in the genre since it was filmed entirely in Lanzarote and is based on nothing less than the staging of the famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi: Aida. This important piece in the operatic canon was recreated on large stages in Lanzarote and set in ancient Egypt by the Swedish team of the Folkoperan (Stockholm Folk Opera Company). It is both a huge treat, and a unique experiment.

The film’s director, the Swede Claes Fellbom, was also the author of a famous film adaptation of Bizet’s opera Carmen . In this case, Aida stands out for the wonderful selection of locations, with the territory of Lanzarote playing an essential role in the plot of the opera. The area around the large pool of Jameos del Agua has some outstanding shots, as does the Cueva de los Verdes and the Charco de los Clicos de El Golfo.

As a curiosity, the film has also been called the “Topless Aida”, because many female characters appear with very little clothing.
